back lane

Behind the buildings

A back lane is a narrow road or alley running behind buildings, typically parallel to a main street.

Back lanes provide service access for deliveries, garbage collection, and parking—functions kept out of sight from the front: Kids used to play in the back lane behind the row houses.

The term is common in British and Canadian English; Americans more often say alley or back alley.
