avant-gardists

Experimenters in creativity

Avant-gardists are artists, writers, or other creators who work in experimental or unconventional styles, pushing against established traditions.

The term carries the military metaphor of an advance guard—those at the front of a movement: The avant-gardists of the 1920s rejected everything their predecessors held sacred.

Sometimes used dismissively for those whose innovation seems more posture than substance.
