author photos
Dust jacket faces
Author photos are the portraits of writers that appear on book jackets, websites, and promotional materials.
The term refers both to the images themselves and to the genre of photography that produces them.
A good author photo balances approachability with intellectual gravitas: Her author photo made her look like someone you'd want to have coffee with.
The conventions vary by genre—literary fiction favors moody black-and-white shots, while self-help authors tend toward warm smiles and good lighting.
