atomic weapons

Fissile mass destruction

Atomic weapons are bombs or warheads that release energy through nuclear fission or fusion—the splitting or combining of atomic nuclei.

The term emerged with the first nuclear bombs in 1945 and remains interchangeable with nuclear weapons, though atomic sometimes carries a mid-century flavor: atomic bomb, atomic age.

The destructive power comes from converting small amounts of matter into enormous energy.
