astronaut ice cream
Crunchy space snack
Astronaut ice cream is freeze-dried ice cream sold as a novelty snack, marketed with the claim that it was developed for space missions.
The freeze-drying process removes moisture, leaving a light, crunchy, chalky block that doesn't require refrigeration.
Despite its name and persistent mythology, astronaut ice cream has rarely if ever actually been consumed in space.
We bought astronaut ice cream at the science museum gift shop.
