ash cross
Forehead smudge symbol
An ash cross is a mark made on the forehead with blessed ashes, traditionally given to Christians on Ash Wednesday.
The cross is drawn by a priest or minister as a reminder of mortality and repentance: She still had her ash cross visible when she returned to work.
The ashes typically come from burned palm fronds from the previous year's Palm Sunday.
