arrogate

Seize without right

Arrogate means to claim or take something for yourself without having the right to do so.

It typically applies to powers, privileges, or authority that someone assumes presumptuously: The committee arrogated to itself the power to veto appointments.

Unlike simply taking something, arrogate carries a strong sense of entitlement or self-importance—the person genuinely believes they deserve what they're claiming, even when they don't.
