antimacassars

Furniture head covers

Antimacassars are protective cloths placed over the backs and arms of upholstered furniture to prevent soiling from hair oil or general wear.

The term comes from Macassar oil, a popular Victorian hair dressing.

Once ubiquitous in parlors and on train seats, they now appear mainly in period settings or grandmother's houses: The antimacassars on her wingback chairs were crocheted lace.
