amateur historian
Unpaid past enthusiast
An amateur historian studies and writes about history without formal academic training or professional credentials.
The term carries no negative connotation—amateur emphasizes passion over payment, not incompetence.
Many amateur historians produce respected work on local history, genealogy, or specialized topics: He's an amateur historian who's written extensively about Civil War battlefields.
