alternative music
College radio genre
Alternative music is rock music that diverges from mainstream commercial sounds, originally describing independent or underground artists outside the major-label system.
The term gained currency in the 1980s for post-punk and college radio bands, then became paradoxically mainstream in the 1990s with grunge and Britpop: The alternative station plays everything from indie rock to electronic.
