West Virginian

Appalachian state resident

A West Virginian is a person from West Virginia, the only U.S. state formed by seceding from a Confederate state during the Civil War.

As an adjective, it describes things relating to the state: West Virginian coal mines, the West Virginian accent.

The state's mountainous terrain has shaped a distinct Appalachian identity.
