Wellington boots
Waterproof footwear, knee-high
Wellington boots are waterproof rubber or plastic boots that extend to the knee or just below it, designed to keep feet dry in wet or muddy conditions.
Named after the first Duke of Wellington, who popularized a similar leather boot style in the early 19th century, they are now standard footwear for farmers, gardeners, and festival-goers trudging through mud.
In British English they are commonly shortened to wellies.
I keep a pair of wellies by the back door for rainy days.
