Victorian portraits

Formal ancestral photographs

Victorian portraits are photographs or paintings from the reign of Queen Victoria (1837–1901), characterized by formal poses, somber expressions, and elaborate staging.

The stiff, unsmiling faces owe partly to long exposure times and partly to period conventions about dignity.

The term now evokes any image with that distinctive severity: She stood frozen like a Victorian portrait.
