Vendée uprising
French counter-revolutionary rebellion
The Vendée uprising was a royalist and Catholic revolt against the French Revolutionary government, erupting in 1793 in the Vendée region of western France.
Peasants resisted military conscription, attacks on the Church, and the execution of Louis XVI.
The Republican army suppressed it brutally, killing tens of thousands—sometimes called the first modern genocide.
The Vendée uprising showed rural France's resistance to revolutionary Paris.
