Tuskegee Study

Infamous Alabama research

The Tuskegee Study was a U.S. government medical experiment (1932–1972) that observed syphilis progression in Black men without treating them, even after penicillin became available.

Participants were told they were receiving free healthcare.

The study's exposure led to modern research ethics requirements including informed consent.

It remains a touchstone for medical racism and institutional betrayal of Black Americans.
