Triassic period
Mesozoic's opening chapter
The Triassic period is the earliest of the three geological periods comprising the Mesozoic Era, spanning roughly 252 to 201 million years ago.
It followed the largest mass extinction in Earth's history and saw the first dinosaurs and mammals emerge.
The name comes from a threefold division of rock strata in Germany where it was first studied.
- fossilPreserved ancient organism
- PangaeaPrehistoric unified landmass
- archosaursReptile superorder, Triassic onward
- ammonitesExtinct coiled-shell cephalopods
