Topsy

Before turvy, chaotically

Topsy is a character from Harriet Beecher Stowe's *Uncle Tom's Cabin* (1852), an enslaved girl who, when asked about her origins, says she wasn't born but "just growed." The name became shorthand for anything that develops haphazardly without planning: The project grew topsy-like, with no clear direction.

The phrase topsy-turvy, meaning upside down or in complete disorder, is unrelated—it predates Stowe by centuries.
