The Revolution

The great upheaval

The Revolution, with the definite article, refers to whichever revolution is most salient in context—usually the one that founded the speaker's nation or transformed their society.

In American English, it typically means the American Revolution of 1776; in French contexts, the French Revolution of 1789.

The phrase can also refer to any transformative upheaval treated as singular and defining: My grandfather fought in the Revolution.

When revolution appears without the article or with an indefinite article, it's just one among many.
