Shakespearean tragedies
Bard's darkest plays
Shakespearean tragedies are the plays of William Shakespeare in which the protagonist meets a disastrous end, typically death—*Hamlet*, *Macbeth*, *Othello*, *King Lear*, *Romeo and Juliet* among them.
The term implies certain conventions: a noble hero with a fatal flaw, mounting catastrophe, and an ending that leaves the stage littered with bodies.
More loosely, any dramatic situation with similarly grand, inevitable destruction: Their marriage became a Shakespearean tragedy.
