Shabbat meals
Friday night dinner
Shabbat meals are the festive meals eaten on the Jewish Sabbath—Friday night dinner, Saturday lunch, and often a third meal before sundown.
These are central to Shabbat observance, marked by candle lighting, wine blessing (kiddush), and braided bread (challah).
Traditional dishes vary by community but are prepared before Shabbat begins, since cooking is prohibited: We're having the whole family over for Shabbat meals.
