Roman characters

Western writing system

Roman characters are the letters of the Latin alphabet—the A-to-Z writing system used for English and most Western European languages.

The term distinguishes this script from others like Cyrillic, Arabic, or Chinese characters: Japanese uses kanji alongside Roman characters for loanwords.

In typography, Roman also contrasts with italic, referring to upright letterforms.
