Pachomius
Egyptian monastic founder
Pachomius is a fourth-century Egyptian monk who founded the first organized Christian monastic community, establishing rules for communal religious life.
Before Pachomius, monks lived as isolated hermits; his innovation was the cenobitic monastery where monks lived, worked, and prayed together under a common rule.
His system influenced all later Western monasticism.
