Néel temperature
Antiferromagnetic transition point
The Néel temperature is the point at which an antiferromagnetic material loses its magnetic ordering and becomes paramagnetic.
Below this temperature, atomic magnetic moments align in alternating directions, canceling each other out.
Above it, thermal energy overcomes this arrangement.
Named after physicist Louis Néel.
The analogous threshold for ferromagnetic materials is the Curie temperature.
- spinRapid rotation around axis
- ferromagnetismStrong atomic magnetic alignment
- paramagneticWeakly attracted to magnets
- susceptibilityLiability to influence
- phase transitionMatter shifting between states
