McAdam

Gravel road pioneer

McAdam refers to John Loudon McAdam (1756–1836), the Scottish engineer who developed a revolutionary road-building technique.

His method—layers of small broken stones compacted into a smooth, durable surface—transformed transportation and gave English the word macadam for such roads, and later tarmac when tar was added as a binder.
