May Day flowers
First-of-month bouquets
May Day flowers are blossoms gathered or given on May 1st, traditionally left anonymously on doorsteps in small baskets as a springtime gesture of friendship or affection.
The custom, now fading, once had children making secret deliveries to neighbors: We picked May Day flowers from the garden and ran away before anyone answered the door.
