Marlboro men

Rugged tobacco mascots

Marlboro men are rugged, masculine cowboy figures used in cigarette advertising from the 1950s onward, representing an idealized American frontier masculinity.

The image became so iconic that Marlboro man now describes any man projecting tough, stoic, outdoorsy masculinity: He had that Marlboro man thing going—weathered face, few words, always squinting at the horizon.

The irony that several actors who played Marlboro men died of smoking-related illnesses has made the term occasionally sardonic.
