John Carter
John Carter is the protagonist of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Barsoom novels, beginning with *A Princess of Mars* (1912).
A Confederate veteran mysteriously transported to Mars, he becomes a warrior among its alien races.
The character established many conventions of planetary romance and sword-and-planet fiction: It's a John Carter setup—Earth man arrives on alien world, becomes hero.
