Irish Potato Famine
1840s crop disaster
The Irish Potato Famine was a period of mass starvation and disease in Ireland from 1845 to 1852, caused by a potato blight that destroyed the crop most of the population depended on.
Over a million people died and another million emigrated, permanently altering Irish demographics and fueling lasting resentment toward British rule.
The event shaped Irish-American identity and remains central to Irish historical memory: Her ancestors came over during the Famine.
