Gawker
Celebrity gossip site
Gawker was a New York-based media company and gossip blog founded in 2002, known for its irreverent coverage of celebrities, media figures, and internet culture.
The site courted controversy and was eventually bankrupted by a lawsuit funded by Peter Thiel after publishing a sex tape of Hulk Hogan.
The name became shorthand for a certain style of snarky, boundary-pushing online journalism. (Lowercase gawker is someone who stares.)
