Creamy salad sauce
French dressing is a creamy, sweet, tomato-based salad dressing, typically orange or reddish in color.
Despite the name, it's an American creation with no clear connection to France.
In some contexts, particularly British usage, French dressing refers instead to a simple vinaigrette of oil, vinegar, and seasonings: I'll have the house salad with French dressing.
