Flying monkeys are the winged primates who serve the Wicked Witch of the West in *The Wizard of Oz*.
The term has become psychological slang for people who do a manipulator's bidding—carrying messages, spreading rumors, or harassing targets on behalf of someone else: Her ex used flying monkeys to keep tabs on her.
The term appears frequently in discussions of narcissistic abuse.
