Capability Brown
English garden designer
Capability Brown is the name by which the English landscape architect Lancelot Brown (1716–1783) is known.
He earned the nickname from his habit of telling clients their estates had "great capability" for improvement.
Brown transformed formal gardens into naturalistic parklands with sweeping lawns, serpentine lakes, and carefully placed tree clumps—a style that defined the English landscape garden and influenced estate design across Britain and beyond.
