California condors

Giant scavenging birds

California condors are the largest flying land birds in North America, with wingspans reaching nearly ten feet.

These massive vultures, native to the western United States, became critically endangered in the twentieth century—by 1987, only 27 remained.

Intensive captive breeding programs have since increased their numbers, though they remain among the rarest birds on earth.

We spotted California condors soaring over the Grand Canyon.
