Balkan music
Brass-heavy regional sound
Balkan music encompasses the traditional and popular music of southeastern Europe—countries like Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Albania, and North Macedonia.
Characterized by complex rhythms (often in odd time signatures like 7/8 or 11/8), brass bands, accordion, and vocal styles ranging from polyphonic harmonies to impassioned solo singing.
The music blends Ottoman, Slavic, Roma, and Mediterranean influences.
The wedding band played Balkan music until dawn.
Western audiences often encounter it through brass ensembles like Fanfare Ciocărlia or film scores by Goran Bregović.
