Asian identity
Continental ethnic background
Asian identity refers to a sense of self connected to Asian heritage, culture, or ancestry.
The term gained prominence in multicultural discourse, particularly in Western countries where people of diverse Asian backgrounds—Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese, Filipino, Korean, and dozens more—are grouped under one umbrella.
This grouping creates both solidarity and tension: She struggled with her Asian identity growing up in a white suburb.
Some embrace pan-Asian identity as politically useful; others find it erases meaningful distinctions between vastly different cultures and histories.
