Asante
West African kingdom
Asante is the name of a major ethnic group and historical kingdom in what is now Ghana, West Africa.
The Asante people, also spelled Ashanti, built a powerful empire in the 17th through 19th centuries known for gold trade, sophisticated political organization, and resistance to British colonialism.
The term appears in historical and anthropological contexts and in references to Asante cultural traditions, including the famous golden stool that symbolizes the nation's unity.
The museum displayed Asante gold weights and kente cloth.
