Antarctic exploration
Southern ice journeys
Antarctic exploration is the investigation of Earth's southernmost continent, its ice sheets, wildlife, and surrounding waters.
The heroic age of Antarctic exploration (roughly 1897–1922) produced legendary expeditions—Shackleton's *Endurance*, Scott's fatal race to the pole, Amundsen's successful one.
Today the term covers scientific research conducted at permanent stations: She spent two winters doing Antarctic exploration for a climate research program.
