year 2000 problem

Y2K computing crisis

The year 2000 problem was a computing flaw stemming from the widespread practice of representing years with only two digits, raising fears that systems would malfunction when "99" rolled over to "00" and was interpreted as 1900.

Massive remediation efforts preceded January 1, 2000, and the anticipated catastrophic failures largely failed to materialize.

Also called Y2K, the millennium bug.
