black swan event

Unpredictable major occurrence

A black swan event is an occurrence that is extremely rare, impossible to predict, and has severe consequences.

The term comes from the ancient assumption that all swans were white—until black swans were discovered in Australia.

In finance and risk analysis, it describes market crashes, pandemics, or other catastrophes that models fail to anticipate: The 2008 financial crisis was a black swan event.
