wrong audience
Unsuitable recipient group
Wrong audience describes a mismatch between a message and the people receiving it—a dirty joke at a funeral, a technical explanation to laypeople, a sales pitch to people who can't buy.
The phrase often appears after something falls flat: I made a Python reference but it was the wrong audience.
It can also excuse a failed attempt at humor or persuasion.
