working over

Giving a thrashing

Working over is giving someone or something sustained, intensive treatment—usually rough.

The phrase most often describes a beating: The thugs worked him over in the alley.

It extends to thorough criticism or interrogation: The committee really worked her over about the missing funds.

Less commonly, working over means revising or reworking something carefully: He spent the weekend working over the manuscript.
