wolf-whistling

Crude appreciative whistle

Wolf-whistling is the act of producing a loud, sliding whistle—typically two notes, one rising and one falling—directed at someone, usually a woman, as a crude expression of sexual attraction or approval of physical appearance.

The practice is associated with construction workers and catcallers, and is widely considered street harassment: She walked past the building site to a chorus of wolf-whistling.
