windburns
Sailor's red cheeks
Windburns is the plural of windburn, a skin irritation caused by prolonged exposure to cold, dry wind.
Like sunburn, windburn leaves skin red, raw, and sometimes painful, but results from wind stripping away the skin's protective oils rather than from UV radiation.
Skiers, sailors, and cyclists are particularly susceptible.
After a day on the slopes without proper protection, she came home with windburns on both cheeks.
