warning tracks

Dirt before walls

A warning track is the strip of different material—usually dirt or gravel—that runs along the outfield wall in baseball stadiums.

The contrasting surface alerts fielders that they're approaching the wall while tracking fly balls, giving them a chance to slow down before collision.

He caught it right at the warning track.

The term sometimes extends metaphorically to any signal that danger or a boundary is near.
