vulgarising
Stripping of refinement
Vulgarising is the British spelling of vulgarizing, the present participle of vulgarize.
To vulgarise something is to make it coarse, crude, or lacking in refinement, or alternatively to make it accessible to ordinary people by simplifying or popularizing it.
The first sense carries negative connotations of debasing something previously elevated; the second is more neutral, suggesting democratization of knowledge or culture.
Critics accused the adaptation of vulgarising the original novel.
