voluntary separation
Leaving by choice
Voluntary separation is the formal term for leaving a job by choice rather than being fired or laid off.
Human resources departments use the phrase to distinguish resignations and early retirements from involuntary terminations: The company offered buyouts to encourage voluntary separation.
The term also appears in military contexts for service members who choose not to reenlist.
