violin solos

Lone string performances

Violin solos are passages in larger musical works where the violin plays alone or takes the melodic lead while other instruments provide minimal accompaniment.

The term also refers to standalone pieces written for unaccompanied violin: Bach's violin solos remain among the most technically demanding works in the repertoire.

A violinist who plays such passages is said to solo.
