vega

Options volatility measure

In astronomy, a vega is a unit of brightness used to calibrate stellar magnitudes, derived from the star Vega's established luminosity as a reference point.

The term appears in technical contexts: The instrument was calibrated in vegas.

In finance, vega measures an option's sensitivity to changes in the underlying asset's volatility—one of the "Greeks" used in options pricing. (Capitalized Vega is the star or a surname.)
