using the bathroom

Visiting the restroom

Using the bathroom is the standard American euphemism for urinating or defecating: I need to use the bathroom.

The phrase works regardless of whether an actual bathroom is involved—you can use the bathroom at a gas station, in the woods, or anywhere else.

It allows reference to bodily functions without specifying which one.
