urban flight
Leaving the metropolis
Urban flight is the movement of residents, typically middle-class families, from cities to suburbs or rural areas.
The phenomenon accelerated in mid-20th-century America as highways and automobiles made commuting feasible, often accompanied by racial and economic anxieties about changing urban neighborhoods.
Urban flight hollowed out the tax base of many industrial cities.
Also called white flight when the racial dimension is emphasized.
